In 1744, the King of England gave away half of North Carolina. This land was part of it. In 1744, King George II granted roughly half of North Carolina — including this exact tract — to a British lord. The land was first settled a few years later by Andrew Lambert, who built a mill here in 1752, and it stayed in private hands even after the Revolution stripped land from the Crown and loyalists. Here's the wild part: during the Revolutionary War, British General Lord Cornwallis — chasing the American army after his defeat at Cowpens — planned to draw supplies from a mill right here on this property before marching on to the Battle of Guilford Court House. Two and a half centuries before a student pilot ever soloed here, this ground had already brushed shoulders with a king and a general.

Before the lake existed, this exact peninsula had already seen 4,000 years of history. Long before Lake Norman Airpark had a single runway, this ground was a seasonal hunting and camping site for the Catawba Indian Nation — chosen for its elevation and its spot along Native trading paths. Archaeologists have found worked flint flakes, old china fragments, and a blackened-soil campsite here that point to human activity as far back as 2,000 BC. Four thousand years before the first Cessna ever landed, people were already picking this peninsula for the same reason pilots do today: it's high ground with a clear view.
