In 1744, the King of England gave away half of North Carolina. This land was part of it. In 1744, King George II granted roughly half of North Carolina — including this exact tract — to a British lord. The land was first settled a few years later by Andrew Lambert, who built a mill here in 1752, and it stayed in private hands even after the Revolution stripped land from the Crown and loyalists. Here's the wild part: during the Revolutionary War, British General Lord Cornwallis — chasing the American army after his defeat at Cowpens — planned to draw supplies from a mill right here on this property before marching on to the Battle of Guilford Court House. Two and a half centuries before a student pilot ever soloed here, this ground had already brushed shoulders with a king and a general.

Before the lake existed, this exact peninsula had already seen 4,000 years of history. Long before Lake Norman Airpark had a single runway, this ground was a seasonal hunting and camping site for the Catawba Indian Nation — chosen for its elevation and its spot along Native trading paths. Archaeologists have found worked flint flakes, old china fragments, and a blackened-soil campsite here that point to human activity as far back as 2,000 BC. Four thousand years before the first Cessna ever landed, people were already picking this peninsula for the same reason pilots do today: it's high ground with a clear view.

Huge congratulations to Cameron on taking the controls for his very first discovery flight with CFII Merritt! Starting that journey into the cockpit is an unforgettable moment. If you’re looking into learning how to fly I would recommend Race City 1000 times! Quality instruction, nice staff, and flexible scheduling. Thank you race city for making my student pilot journey fun!

Michael Nunez

I had my first discovery flight with Ethan and he was very knowledgeable and nice, and was very clear when teaching about the operations of the planes! 100% recommend

Jason Briggs

Awesome staff great experience on the discovery flight!!!!

Grace Li

I love race city flight operations!! Josh is a great instructor!

Would highly recommend RaceCity 14A As a flight school and ground training! This is a family owned and operated business/flight school/FBO that you will not find anywhere quite like it. I did the back-to-back weekend course for the PPL ground school/written test prep. Overall, I’m very pleased and feel like it prepared me for both the test and an upcoming check ride. Patrick, Nicole, Josh and Kyle are amazing!

Michael Weeks

5 stars is not enough! The whole crew at RCFO is professional, friendly, and genuinely cares about your success as a student. Could not recommend them enough.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Race City Flight Operations is hands down the best flight school I have trained with. I have been to three different flight schools prior, and no one even comes close. Race City truly wants you to succeed. Their organization, knowledge, and attention to detail are the best I have ever seen. They have a clear structure and proven templates to follow that set you up for success instead of leaving you guessing. You always know what is expected and what the next step is. They also make you feel like part of their family, not just another student. Since switching to Race City, I have seen huge progress in both my flying skills and overall aviation knowledge. I honestly wish I would have started my training with them from day one. If you are serious about learning to fly and want a school that is fully invested in your success, this is the place to be. – Jacob
