Airports don’t just move planes—they move hope, supplies, and the future of our community.

Airports don’t just move planes—they move hope, supplies, and the future of our community.

This was never more evident than in the wake of Hurricane Helene, when aviation became the lifeline for countless communities cut off by devastating floods and impassable roads.

The skies over western North Carolina, in particular, became a bustling network of aid, where amongst other aircraft our fleet of airplanes worked in concert to deliver essential relief.
From these hubs, smaller aircraft and an army of helicopters took over. Non-profit organizations like Operation Airdrop, Operation Helo Aerobridge rallied general aviation pilots and private plane owners who volunteered their time and resources. Using smaller, more agile aircraft, these pilots were able to access smaller, closer-to-the-source airports. They flew dozens of missions, delivering thousands of pounds of aid to locations where ground access was impossible. Helicopter crews performed daring rescues, navigating through tight, debris-strewn landing zones to evacuate people from submerged homes and nursing facilities.
The relief operation was a testament to the versatility and compassion of the aviation community. The coordination was intricate, with designated “SAAFR” (Special Aircraft Airspace and Flight Rules) routes established to manage the diverse mix of civilian and military aircraft. These “roads in the sky” ensured that everyone, from the U.S. Army’s heavy-lift Chinook helicopters to small, private planes, could operate safely and effectively. It was a clear demonstration that airports and the aircraft they serve are more than just infrastructure—they are catalysts for humanity, connecting people in their most desperate times and proving that even in the face of a storm’s fury, the spirit of a community can soar.
